Application:
Sodium polystyrenesulfonate is a cation exchange resin, that serves as an effective drug for the treatment of hyperkalemia. In exchange for hydrogen ions, sodium polystyrene sulfonate causes the stomach to release sodium ions. Substance decreases the amount of potassium that is absorbed into the blood, causing the body to excrete more of it. Consequently, the body’s potassium levels drop.
